In the province of Gorizia, the sole award goes to Grado, known as the "Island of the Sun," built up on a string of small islets in the heart of the Grado and Marano Lagoon — at roughly 160 km², one of the largest lagoon systems in the northern Mediterranean. The old town, with Roman and early Christian roots, faces a sandy beach flanked to the east by the Isonzo River Mouth Nature Reserve (Isola della Cona, about 2,400 hectares) and to the west by the Valle Cavanata Nature Reserve — two wetlands that act as a natural buffer between the coast and the Gorizia hinterland.

On the Udine side, the Blue Flag goes to Lignano Sabbiadoro, a sandy peninsula wedged between the Adriatic Sea and the mouth of the Tagliamento, the last major Alpine river whose lower course still runs largely free of major dams. The fine, gently sloping beach runs for about 8 continuous km, bordered to the north by the historic pine forest that separates the town from the Marano Lagoon — and it's this close overlap of beach, river mouth and lagoon that gives this stretch of coast a character quite distinct from the Gorizia side.

Two flags, two lagoons: the regional coastline in short

Side by side, Grado and Lignano Sabbiadoro tell the same story about this stretch of Adriatic coast: both grew up on narrow strips of land between the open sea and a lagoon system behind them — the Grado and Marano Lagoon, which effectively links the two destinations geographically even though they sit in different provinces. It's within this band, between the Isonzo mouth to the east and the Tagliamento mouth to the west, that the whole of Friuli Venezia Giulia's Blue Flag recognition is concentrated today.
